On January 10, 1969, Zenith unveiled the El Primero, the world's first automatic chronograph. The model presented here dates from the 1970s.
Despite fierce competition in watchmaking and on the eve of the quartz crisis, Zenith, a historic manufacturer from Le Locle, asserted its technical mastery. The 3019 PHC caliber powering this timepiece beats at 36,000 vibrations per hour, an unprecedented frequency allowing time measurement with record 1/10th of a second precision. Its reliability and accuracy would lead Rolex to select it in the early 1980s, as part of a decade-long agreement, to power the first automatic Daytona models (ref. 16520), under the designation caliber 4030, presented in 1988.
