This Gruen Precision chronograph dates back to the 1970s. Its beautifully patinated dial pairs applied indices with two sub-dials, along with telemeter and tachymeter scales, housed in a steel case.
It is powered by the manual-wind Valjoux 7730 caliber, derived from the famous Venus 188 caliber, a brand absorbed by Valjoux in 1966.

Watch Condition
The watch is entirely original. The dial is in good condition and has never been touched. The case is in good condition with some signs of wear.

Who is Gruen?

Gruen is an American watchmaker founded in 1894 in Ohio by German-born watchmaker Dietrich Gruen. It was among the great United States watch manufacturers, alongside Hamilton, Bulova, and Elgin, and reached its peak in sales in 1953. In 1958, the company, by then known as Gruen Industries, was sold off in pieces.

From the Venus 188 to the Valjoux 7730

When Valjoux absorbed Venus in 1966, it took over the Venus 188—a cam-actuated chronograph that was less expensive to manufacture than a column-wheel one—and relaunched it under the name 7730. It is a manual-winding movement with 17 jewels, beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour. The Valjoux 7750, one of the most widespread automatic chronographs, is a descendant of this movement.

What are the telemeter and tachymeter used for?

The tachymeter allows for the calculation of an average speed over a known distance. The telemeter estimates the distance to a phenomenon where the light is seen before the sound is heard, such as lightning or gunfire.

I bought an Omega watch with an incredible patina from Vintage Watch Spirit. The watches in their catalog are splendid. A promising family-run start-up in vintage watchmaking.
I won't hesitate to go back to them.
